I hope this newsletter finds you all well and the start of winter has been kind to you and your whānau.
|
Over the weekend, I had the absolute privilege of flying down to Dunedin to celebrate my son Hugo’s graduation. He has completed his conjoint Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce (LLB/BCom) degrees, and I couldn’t be prouder. As I sat there in the audience, I reflected on the many people who have helped shape Hugo’s journey—from his earliest days with his grandparents and early childhood educators, through to his school teachers and university lecturers.

It reminded me of the powerful role we all play in the lives of our young people. Teachers, learning assistants, whānau—everyone contributes to a child’s success. This deep sense of gratitude made me think about the incredible team we have here at HIS. Our teachers and learning assistants go above and beyond every single day.
|
|
It’s not just about teaching subjects—it’s about caring deeply for each student who walks through our gates. Our staff show immense manaakitanga. They build trust, offer guidance, and create relationships grounded in respect. Because only when we build mutual respect can we truly influence the hearts and minds of our rangatahi.
|
So today, I want to take a moment to say: thank you to all our kaiako for everything you do—every lesson, every check-in, every encouraging word. You are making a difference. We are making a difference.

Waitangi Leaders Trip - 8-9 May
|
|
I would like to take a moment to commend all of our student leaders across the school. I had the privilege of accompanying this outstanding group to Waitangi for an overnight leadership hui, and I couldn’t be prouder.
|
|
Throughout the trip, they were incredible ambassadors for our kura, consistently demonstrating the values we hold dear. In fact, I received two separate comments from members of the public who praised their respectful, mature behaviour—a true testament to their character and leadership.
|
It was an honour to be part of this experience with them, and I am immensely proud to be their Tumuaki.
|
|
Attendance Reminder – Let’s Aim for Every Day
|
|
This term is short—just nine weeks—and every day matters. We’re working hard to ensure all of our students are present and engaged in their learning, and we need your support. Please help us by prioritising attendance and letting us know if your child needs to be away.
|
Together, we want the very best for every learner at HIS, and it starts with being here.

Pasifika Leadership Summit 2025
|
|
|
|
|
Tula’i (formally known as the West Auckland Pasifika Forum) have collaborated with some amazing organisations to bring an exciting opportunity for some of our young Pasifika people of West Auckland this term.
|
This included a Leadership Summit that 10 of our Pasifika students attended at Kelston Community Centre on Monday 5th May. Students met with facilitators and participated in group workshops focusing on values, leadership and culture.
|
|
For the remainder of the term students will participate in small group sessions with TYMS (Tuilaepa Youth Mentoring Services) and will spend a day with Adventure Specialists on an outdoor activity such as rock climbing, caving or high ropes. Congratulations to these students who have been selected for this opportunity this term:
|
|

We are holding a Quiz night here at school to raise funds for our teams to attend NZAIMS 2025!

School Production - can you help?
|
|
We are well on our way to having an awesome production this year!
|
|
We are asking our school community for some help. Below is our vision for costumes for Aladdin this year. If you have access to any of the items of clothing and are willing to let us use these from Week 8 of Term 2 until Week 4 of Term 3, we would greatly appreciate it! Leaders Trip to Waitangi
|
In week 2, 17 of our school leaders along with Whaea Viv, Mr Crawford and Matua
Mark had the privilege of going to Waitangi overnight.
|
The group stopped off in Whanāgrei to view and tour the Hinemoana ll, which is a double-hulled waka with an all female crew that protect and research whales. The next stop was a guided tour of the Treaty of Waitangi grounds along with a cultural experience. Students enjoyed using the swimming pool at their accomdation and a yummy dinner to follow.

We celebrated Pink Shirt Day here at school last Friday. Students came to school dressed in Pink, standing together to say NO to bullying! Thank you so much to our school whānau for your support! Together we raised $1083.00 for this very worthy cause!
|

Our school is supporting Attendance West with collecting clean, good-quality blankets, duvets, and sleeping bags to deliver directly to families in need across West Auckland.
|
|
If you have any that you can spare, you can send them to the school office. Let's help keep our children warm!

Lost Property and Uniform
|
|
|
|
We currently have a growing collection of lost property, mostly school jumpers, and unfortunately, none of these items are named. This makes it very difficult for us to return them to their rightful owners.
|
We ask that all of your child’s uniform items are clearly labelled with their name. Please also check the labels regularly, as names can fade in the wash and may need to be re-written.
|
A reminder also that during the winter months (Term 2 and 3), black shoes and socks are to be worn (no sandals).
|
|

|
In room 33/34 we learned about epilepsy and how it affects people in their day to day life. We discussed the effects and how it can look during a seizure. We learned that some people with epilepsy can’t drive and that some people who have epilepsy have dogs who can sense when a seizure is coming and guide their person to a safe place to have their seizure. It was a cool and fun day and we were glad to get to learn about epilepsy and why wearing purple on this day was important.

Zombie maths was all about learning fractions. We did word problems whilst Mr Mill’s zombie was patrolling the classroom angrily grunting when Mr Mills told us about all the zombies captured. I am pretty sure that most of us can now agree Mrs Kraay should become an actor after seeing her first class acting of zombies. Now when someone brings up fractions, a smile lights up my face remembering the zombie who tried to run free in our classroom.
