Newsletter - Term 1 Week 7

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Ngā mihi nui to our wonderful parents and community members that volunteered to help on athletics day last Wednesday. We were blown away by the response to the request for support and it was a huge factor in the success of the day. Our students and staff appreciate your kindness. Congratulations to our students who gave the events their best efforts last Wednesday and well done to those who competed at the Southland Secondary School Athletics Championship on Saturday at Surrey Park.

A reminder that you do not have to wait for formal interviews or school reports to speak with us about your child's progress. You can make contact with NSC staff by email which can be found on our website and school app (format is firstname.lastname@nsc.school.nz) or you can phone the school office to pass on a message. This is also the case if you want to see your child's Dean, a Senior Leadership Team member or a Support Staff person. Get in touch and we will do our best to help.

Finally, on Thursday 16 March NSC will not be open for instruction due to PPTA industrial action. All union members will be on strike for the day. Any student attending school will be in supervised study for the duration of the day. There will be no buses running.

Ngā mihi

Staggered Board of Trustee Elections

The Board of Trustees (BOT) elections at Northern Southland College have previously been held on a three-year cycle. The current Board Representatives would like to make a change by holding mid-term elections of the parent representatives as it is felt this would provide better continuity of expertise governing the school.

For more information on the process of Staggered (mid-term) elections, please look at this link. https://www.schoolboardelections.org.nz/board-resources/staggered-mid-term-elections/

The Board of Trustees would like to give notice to parents and students that this matter will be discussed and decided on at the Board of Trustees meeting held at 6pm on Monday 8th May, 2023 at the school. Parents and students have a right to attend this meeting (and any other BOT meeting) as part of the consultation process. It is the Board’s decision which three positions are for the three-year term of office and which two are for the 18 month term. The proposed date for the first mid-term election would be April, 2024

It would be helpful if you could notify the Board’s secretary by emailing anna.highfield@nsc.school.nz if you are going to attend so we can pick a suitable venue within the school.

Coaches/Managers:

  • We have a number of students signing up to play their chosen winter sport next term. But we are desperately seeking anyone who would be interested in volunteering their time to coach or manage either, Yr 7/8 Hockey or Yr 7/8 Basketball. Without people to commit to these roles we are unable to enter teams. Please contact Michelle Elder for further information (michelle.elder@nsc.school.nz)

Hockey News:

  • We have received an update from the Invercargill Hockey Association with an update on where they are at with the turf situation…
Thank you so much for your patience and flexibility last year. It was tough on all of us as Covid caused shipping delays and supply issues that required us to play on one turf.

You will all be aware of the fire that was deliberately lit on Friday 17 February. We are absolutely gutted. We should be so excited to be starting the season on two new beautiful blue turfs that were fundraised for over a number of years and paid for with amazing grants from the Lotteries Commission, the ILT Foundation, Community Trust South and the Aotearoa Gaming Trust.

The turf that was destroyed in the car park which was to be laid 3 days later is now being remade and Tiger Turf tell us that it will be laid most likely in early April in time for this season.

Junior Hockey:
  • Eastern Southland Hockey have a competition for Year 7 & 8. This is played on a Sunday from 10am- 1pm. It is 6 aside half field hockey which has space for players to build their skills and lots of goal scoring opportunities. The games are at Gore Hockey Turf or Invercargill Hockey Turf. Practices are held during the week at Northern Southland College Turf.
  • Registrations are on the Play HQ platform: Please register on the link below. If you can
coach/manager/umpire, please register your details as well. The registration will generate a blank invoice (ignore this): Please make your payment of $110 to Eastern Hockey 03 0915 0312424 008 and put your child's name as a reference
  • We are still waiting for information from Invercargill Hockey Association regarding the Year 7/8 weekly competition.
Senior Hockey:
  • Weekly competition will start Week 3 of Term 2 either Monday or Tuesday night (this is yet to be confirmed).
  • We are looking to take a Senior Team to Tournament week in August. This will require players and families to commit to some fundraising to help go toward this.

School App:

A reminder to select the Sport in the Alert Subscriptions your child is signed up to. This is the best way to be kept up to date with any relevant information.
