Industrial Action – NZEI Te Riu Roa Teachers’ Strike on Thursday 16 March

Kia ora e te whānau

The New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) Te Rui Roa has advised the St Brigid’s School Board that its member teachers at our school will be taking strike action on Thursday 16 March 2023.

NZEI Te Riu Roa members have voted to strike because they consider funding for our schools is not sufficient to give teachers and principals the time and resources to teach.

They consider resourcing is needed to ensure that:
  • all of our tamariki thrive, and
  • we can retain our quality educators and school leaders in the sector.
St Brigid’s will be closed for normal instruction due to our Principal and the majority of our teachers being union members. However, as indicated last week, the school will have limited supervision available. Thank you to those who indicated on the form that they needed supervision for their child/children on Thursday. We have confirmed with those parents via email.

Thank you for your understanding and support in this important matter.

Ngā mihi nui

Meg Davies
Presiding Member
St Brigid’s Board of Trustees

We warmly welcome Ray Laniog who joined us this week in Room 10. Ray's family is new to our school.
We hope you thoroughly enjoy being part of the St Brigid's family.
Kia ora e te whānau,

This Friday is Saint Patrick’s Day. St Patrick lived his life in faith and shared it with the people in Ireland. We can be inspired by St Patrick and try our best during lent especially to turn back to God in prayer.

Here is a St Patrick's prayer:

As I arise today, may the strength of God pilot me, the power of God uphold me, the wisdom of God guide me.
May the eye of God look before me, the ear of God hear me, the word of God speak for me.
May the hand of God protect me, the way of God lie before me, the shield of God defend me, the host of God save me.
May Christ shield me today. Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me,
Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit, Christ when I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

Upcoming events this term:

  • Reconciliation for Years 3-8 students at 11.15am on Thursday 30 March (Week 9) at the Parish Church of St Francis of Assisi Ohariu.
  • Stations of the Cross Liturgy at 1.40pm on Wednesday 5 April (Week 10) at the Parish Church of St Francis of Assisi Ohariu.

Registrations due for Miniball/Basketball teams for Term 2 league - Year 3-8 students

The online registration form MUST be completed and returned by 3pm, Wednesday 15 March (no late entries accepted) so we can organise teams and ensure we have coaches/managers for each team.
The link to the registration form was emailed to families last Friday, 10 March.
This Friday, 17 March we are having a green non-uniform day to celebrate St Patrick's Day. Students do not need to bring a gold coin donation as we are not fundraising.

As Room 6 are going on their city trip, they will need to come to school in full school uniform .

Student Desks Available

We have 6 student desks available (height 70cm) to those who would like them for home. They are in fairly good condition. Pick up from the office this week. A koha donation of $10 would be appreciated to go towards purchasing new collaborative classroom furniture. Thank you for your support.

Before School Care at West Park School for St Brigid's Children

Kelly Club West Park are now able to provide Before School Care to St Brigid's children.

The programme is run from the West Park School hall between 7.30am-8.30am - check the link below for more about what they offer for both Before and After School Care. The children will be escorted from West Park on foot from 8.25am by a staff member who will ensure they arrive at St Brigid's safely, ready for their school day.

If you would like your child/ren to attend the West Park programme, please enrol them through the website at www.kellyclub.co.nz/west-park. Please ensure you place (SB) at the end of your child's surname when you enrol them to identify them as St Brigid's children. Thank you. Grace from Kelly Club will then contact you to arrange for written authorisation for the walking bus.

Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email Grace (Programme Co-ordinator) at West Park Kelly Club: westpark@kellyclub.co.nz.

Challenge 2000 After School Youth Programme

I am excited to inform you that Challenge 2000 has started a new after school Youth Programme based in Johnsonville. It is at Johnsonville Community Centre in the main hall, next to the library, every Tuesday within term time, 3pm - 4:45pm.
It is aimed at years 7 - 13. Food, games and activities will be provided, as well as a place to chill out and get to know some of our Challenge 2000 staff. We also provide day trips/holiday programmes in the school holidays for those who attend the group.
Young people who would like to attend can just turn up. They will receive a permission form that needs to be filled out by a parent or guardian and brought back to us the following week.

Thank you
