PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,
Welcome to the first week of Autumn! As we farewell the summer that wasn't, we reflect on how lucky we have been in Rotorua to avoid the destructive weather that many parts of Aotearoa have experienced during the past few months. To show our support for these communities, we had a Mufti Day, raising $500 which will be included in the Hamilton Diocese Cyclone Relief Fund. The schools in the Hamilton Diocese have adopted Gisborne as the region where we are going to target our fundraising.
This term as part of our Localised Curriculum and NZ Histories curriculum, our children are learning about histories and experiences of the peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand. Last week classes visited the Rotorua Museum classroom at the Library to learn about the Te Arawa Journeys and Ihenga the Great Explorer. Through interactive learning experiences, they tracked Ihenga's journey from Maketu to Rotorua and discovered how he named the places he encountered on his journey.
Next Monday, the children in Galilee have been invited to attend the St Mary's swimming sports at the Aquatic Centre. If you are able to help out on the day, would you please get in touch with Shayla O'Neill.
Next week we celebrate St Patrick's Day. This day is very much a tradition at St Michael's when we remember the works of St Patrick and celebrate the Mercy sisters who travelled from Ireland to establish our school in 1958. Children are encouraged to come to school dressed in green and bring a plate of sweet goodies to sell at the green cake stall. The money raised this year will go towards the Hamilton Diocese Cyclone Relief Fund. We will begin our day with a liturgy in Galilee but due to the limited space we are unable to invite our community. We are all looking forward to having our hall back in use after the Easter holidays when we can invite our school community to liturgical celebrations.
Keep the afternoon of Friday 24 March free! Our PTA are busy organising the Colour Run event for our children. This is their big fundraiser event for the year with funds going towards developing an outdoor play space behind the Ark for all children to enjoy. Make sure to get your children registered so they can start raising money and earn awesome prizes.
